Recently, lots of white folks have said to me, "But I don't know how to start!" when it comes to speaking up about the genocide in Gaza, or racism, or the systems of poverty, or human rights, or the environment, or any other social justice issue.
My own amazing teachers (mostly Black & brown women and Iām grateful to all of them) have taught me that step 1 is always community. Find at least one person who is like-minded - a friend, your mom, at a book club, in an online group, etc.
We white folk have been conditioned that if we are only strong enough, we can isolate ourselves and still create change and have a meaningful life. This is complete and utter bullshit.
Rugged white individualism creates an echo chamber of loneliness, fear, and suspicion of anybody who differs from you.
It's not complicated, but the truth has been hidden away from us deliberately because this is the truth that empowers us to rise up against oppression: WE NEED COMMUNITY.
Community is resistance. If you try to do this alone, you will fail. It won't stick.
Step 1 is community. Find one friend who's willing to start exploring with you. Or a friend who is a little bit ahead of you and will help you.
If you can't think of anybody, DM me. I'll help you get started, for free. This is not a sales pitch.
And do it TODAY. The world needs you right now. š
